The final rule of the Contained Agile Methodology Process (CAMP)™ framework is often the most neglected, yet it is essential for the long-term success of your organization's project cadence: CAMP Rule #8 - Gather ‘Round the Fire: Share Stories, Celebrate Wins, and Reset.
A project isn't truly complete until you've performed a formal closing ceremony. This serves two vital purposes: knowledge capture and team morale.
The Three Pillars of Project Closure
Successful closure goes beyond just signing off on the final invoice. It encompasses three key activities:
Administrative Wrap-Up (The Reset):
Final Handoff: Transfer all project documentation (the Charter, Requirements, Design, Training Materials) to the operational/support team.
Release Resources: Formally release the project team members and reallocate their time to new projects.
Financial Closure: Finalize budget reports and reconcile all project expenditures.
The Retrospective (Lessons Learned):
This is the most critical step for continuous improvement. Facilitate a structured meeting where the team answers three questions honestly:
What Went Well? (Keep doing this!)
What Could Be Improved? (Stop doing this!)
What Do We Commit to Changing on the Next Project? (Actionable items).
These lessons must be formally documented and shared with the entire Project Management Office (PMO) to prevent repeating the same mistakes.
The Celebration (Share Stories):
Take the time to acknowledge the hard work. Celebrate the win and thank the key contributors. This ritual is essential for preventing team burnout and building positive momentum for the next project. The celebration should focus on how the new system is delivering business value (The Why from Rule #1), not just the fact that it launched.
How CAMP Builds Momentum for the Next Project
By rigorously following Rule #8, you create a seamless transition to the next project phase or implementation. The lessons learned feed directly into the next Project Charter (Rule #1), making the next project start even stronger. The morale built from the celebration fuels the team's energy for the next challenge.
The CAMP methodology isn't just about finishing the current project; it's about building a sustainable, high-performing project culture.
This concludes our 8-week journey through the Contained Agile Methodology Process (CAMP)™ Rules.
