Implement CAMP Rule #5 and learn how to apply the RACI Matrix in your Salesforce projects. Clarify roles (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed), eliminate confusion, and reduce project risk with practical examples.

After establishing your core boundaries (Rule #4), the next step in ensuring smooth execution is assigning clear responsibilities. This is the heart of Contained Agile Methodology Process (CAMP)™ Rule #5: Use RACI: Everyone Has a Role to Play.

The RACI Matrix is a simple but incredibly effective tool for clarifying roles and responsibilities across a Salesforce project. When used correctly, it eliminates confusion, prevents bottlenecks, and accelerates decision-making.

Understanding the Roles in the Salesforce RACI Matrix

For every major task, activity, or deliverable, there should be only one of each:

  • R - Responsible: The person or team who does the work to complete the task. (e.g., The Developer who codes the Flow).

  • A - Accountable: The person who is ultimately answerable for the correct and thorough completion of the task. They must approve the work. (There can be only ONE 'A' for any task!) (e.g., The Product Owner who approves the final functionality).

  • C - Consulted: Those whose opinions are sought and who provide input. This is a two-way communication. (e.g., The Business Analyst who validates the requirement is met).

  • I - Informed: Those who are kept up-to-date on progress, but whose input is not required. This is one-way communication. (e.g., The Executive Sponsor who receives the weekly status report).

Why the Salesforce RACI Matrix Minimizes Project Risk

In complex Salesforce implementations, the biggest risk often comes from human ambiguity. Salesforce RACI Matrix minimizes risk by:

  1. Ending Duplication: If two people think they are Responsible (R), you get wasted effort. RACI forces a single assignment.

  2. Preventing Decision Bottlenecks: By clearly defining the Accountable (A) party, you ensure decisions get made without needing a consensus from ten people.

  3. Ensuring Necessary Input: The Consulted (C) role guarantees that critical experts (e.g., Security, Legal, Finance) are brought in at the right time.

Contained Agile Methodology Process (CAMP)™ - Salesforce RACI Matrix Examples

Here are three examples of how to apply RACI in a typical Salesforce project environment:

Activity

Responsible (R)

Accountable (A)

Consulted (C)

Informed (I)

Finalizing Scope for Sprint 1

Project Manager

Product Owner

Business Analysts

Core Dev Team

Developing a New Apex Trigger

Developer

Technical Architect

QA Engineer

Product Owner

Acceptance of User Stories

QA Engineer

Product Owner

End-Users

Project Manager

The most common mistake is assigning multiple people as Accountable. Remember: "Accountable" is the buck stopper.

The Contained Agile Methodology Process (CAMP)™ Course provides you with a fully populated RACI template customized for typical Salesforce project phases and a workshop guide to implement this with your team quickly and effectively.
